20101007

She turns me off.
反义应该是She turns me on.
She turns me on.
She is such a turn-on.

a. To affect with dislike, displeasure, or revulsion: That song really turns me off.
b. To affect with boredom: The play turned the audience off.
c. To lose or cause to lose interest; withdraw: turning off to materialism.
d. To cease paying attention to: The student turned off the boring lecture and daydreamed.

20101008---We're all in the same boat.

20101008

We're all in the same boat.
to be in the same boat就常用来比喻“处于同一境况”,往往指不幸境况
eg:
Bill:I was just told I have to take a pay cut.
George:We were all told that. You’re not alone.
Bill:But I really can’t take this cut, I won’t be able to survive.
George:We’re all in the same boat. It will be tough on all of us.

To miss the boat.
eg: We found exactly the house we wanted, but we waited to buy it in the hope the price would go down. But we missed the boat; when we called the agent back, he'd just sold it to another family.

a close call or a close shave

A narrow escape.
eg:
That skier just missed the tree--what a close call.
That was a close shave, nearly leaving your passport behind.
来源:
The first phrase dates from the late 1800s and comes from sports, alluding to an official's decision (call) that could have gone either way. The second, from the early 1800s, alludes to the narrow margin between closely shaved skin and a razor cut. (This latter usage replaced the much earlier equation of a close shave with miserliness, based on the idea that a close shave by a barber meant one would not have to spend money on another shave quite so soon.)

pain in the neck or pain in the ass

英文翻译:something or someone that causes trouble; a source of unhappiness

M: [Phone rings] Hello? I'm sorry. I'm not interested. No. No thank you. Look, I said I am not interested! [sound of phone hanging up]
L:Michael,
M: That was someone who wanted to sell me a magazine subscription over the phone. Those people are such a pain in the neck!
A pain in the neck?
M: That's right. Pain. A pain in the neck is something that is just very very annoying.
L:噢,我明白了,“a pain in the neck”就是指讨厌到了极点。
M: Exactly. I can't stand telemarketers. When I get home and finally sit down, they always call. What a pain!
哎,“a pain in the neck”是不是只能形容人呢?
M: Not always. Things or situations can be a "pain in the neck".
L:噢, 所以,“a pain in the neck”还可以拿来指某样东西,或者是某种处境。那我可不可以说“It is such a pain in the neck when the electricity goes out”?
M: You've got it! And it really was a pain in the neck, too! I couldn't do anything last week when we had the blackout. I couldn't cook, couldn't watch TV......
L:哎哟,不能看电视算得上什么“pain in the neck”。
M: Yeah, well that's all over now. [muffled sound of drumming] Oh man! It's my neighbor again! He always plays his drums in the evening. It's such a pain in the neck.
真是个“pain in the neck”。
M: Yeah, well if it's that bad, why don't you ask your neighbor to do something about it.
这个人啊,也是个“pain in the neck”。

I'm not myself today.

Teacher: What’s wrong with you?
William: I’m not myself today.

“I’m not myself”这句话是什么意思呢? What’s wrong with you?” I am not myself today”“我今天状态不佳".

You bet!

:Of course; surely.
You can bet money on that."
eg:
I think people in that neighborhood are snobs.
Oh, you bet.

K:  Hi, Matthew
M:Hey, Kiele, what happened with that English teacher you were hiring to teach your cousin.
K:  Oh, I was hoping you wouldn’t ask me about that…
M:How come?
K:  Well, I spoke to the teacher on the telephone. And our conversation seemed to be going well. And when I asked her if I could call her back, she said something I didn’t quite understand.
M:What did she say?
K:  It sounded something like ‘you bet’. Is this a ‘yes’ or a ‘no’?
M:Well, the good news it that it’s a ‘yes’, but I can understand how it made you feel confused.
K:  Great. So, can you explain? I mean, I know that a ‘bet’ is when two people disagree on something uncertain. They ‘bet’ an amount of money on each possibility. And when the case is decided, the person who guessed – or bet correctly will win all of the money.
M:Yes. That’s it. So I might bet with you that the weather tomorrow will be rainy, for example.
K:  I’d never bet money on the weather! And anyway, still I don’t understand how ‘you bet’ can mean ‘yes’.
M:Sure. Think of ‘you bet’ as an abbreviation – a shortened form of a much longer phrase.
K:  What is that phrase?
M:It’s something like: ‘Yes. And I’m so sure that the answer is ‘yes’ that I recommend that you bet your money on the answer being ‘yes’. As well as saying ‘you bet, you might also say ‘you can bet on it’.
K:  Oh, I see. And are you saying that I can use this phrase even though I disagree with gambling?
M:Yes. That’s definitely true. Although it was originally related to gambling, people don’t even make the connection any more. So, are you going to call that teacher on the telephone again?
K:  You bet I am!

Over my dead body!

很多豪言壮语会这么说,you will do it over my dead body!
You will break my house over my dead body!
I will never let this happen. When you absolutely will not allow a person to do something you might say "over my dead body." The [literal] meaning is that you will stand in the way of that person and only if they kill you and walk over your dead body will they be able to do what they want.
eg
You kids are not going out in the cold without your jackets! Not over my dead body!"
Parents say "over my dead body" often because they are in a position of authority and they are much bigger than their children
.
-All of my friends are going out to the lake tonight and I'm going too!

英文解释:to arrange something in a way that is not fair in order to achieve what you want(mainly American)
来源:This phrase comes from the idea of arranging a set of cards in a card game so that you will win.

Competing with the wife? Like that's not a stacked deck.
2).Our boss said that we"d all be considered for the promotion. But we suspected that the deck was stacked against us. And sure enough the boss gave the promotion to his wife"s cousin.

bury one's head in the sand/ hide one's head in the sand/ have one's head in the sand

Refuse to confront or acknowledge a problem.
来源:This comes from the supposed habit of ostriches hiding when faced with attack by predators. The story was first recorded by the Roman writer Pliny the Elder, who suggested that ostriches hide their heads in bushes. Ostriches don't hide, either in bushes or sand, although they do sometimes lie on the ground to make themselves inconspicuous. The 'burying their head in the sand' myth is likely to have originated from people observing them lowering their heads when feeding.
The story also relies on the supposed stupidity of ostriches, and of birds in general. In fact, there's little to support that either as birds have a significantly larger brain to weight ratio than many other species of animal. The notion is that the supposedly dumb ostrich believes that if it can't see its attacker then the attacker can't see it. This was nicely reformed as a joke on Douglas Adams' 'Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy', in which the 'Ravenous Bugblatter Beast of Traal' was described as 'so mind-bogglingly stupid that it assumes that if you can't see it, then it can't see you.'

eg

For years we have been hiding our heads in the sand, refusing to admit that the store is losing money.

When it comes to a family quarrel, Dean just buries his head in the sand.

Every dog has its day./Every dog has his day.

英文解释something that you say which means that everyone is successful during some period in their life.  Everyone gets a chance eventually.
来源According to the medieval Dutch scholar Erasmus, the saying came about as a result of the death of the Greek playwright Euripides, who in 405 B.C. was mauled and killed by a pack of dogs loosed upon him by a rival. Thus the saying is usually taken to mean that even the most lowly person will at some time get revenge on his oppressor, no matter how powerful the man may be. The Greek biographer Plutarch recorded the proverb for the first time in 'Moralia' (A.D. c. 95) rendering it as 'Even a dog gets his revenge,' and Richard Taverner included the first version in English - 'A dogge hath a day' - centuries later in his 'Proverbes' or Adages' .What was virtually the modern form appeared in John Ray's 'A collection of English Proverbs' as 'Every dog hath his day'."

a bed of roses

A situation which is easy and comfortable
出处
1.From Christopher Marlowe's The Passionate Shepherd To His Love. This was published posthumously in 1599 - Marlowe died in 1593.

Come live with me and be my love,
And we will all the pleasures prove
That valleys, groves, hills, and fields,
Woods or steepy mountain yields.

And we will sit upon the rocks,
Seeing the shepherds feed their flocks,
By shallow rivers to whose falls
Melodious birds sing madrigals.

And I will make thee beds of roses
And a thousand fragrant posies,
A cap of flowers, and a kirtle
Embroidered all with leaves of myrtle;

A gown made of the finest wool
Which from our pretty lambs we pull;
Fair lined slippers for the cold,
With buckles of the purest gold;

A belt of straw and ivy buds,
With coral clasps and amber studs:
And if these pleasures may thee move,
Come live with me and be my love.

The shepherds' swains shall dance and sing
For thy delight each May morning:
If these delights thy mind may move,
Then live with me and be my love.

Here, Marlowe was referring to real flowers. The phrase has since come to be used figuratively to refer to any easy and pleasantsituation - floral or otherwise.

2.The literal interpretation of the phrase was taken up again in the imagery for the 1999 film 'American Beauty'. The commercial potential of that imagery was soon exploited and 'Bed of Roses' bath kits were soon on sale. They rather spoiled the effect by using the blurb 'if you want to re-create the inimitable scene from American Beauty...'.

eg:Life isn't a bed of roses.

let the cat out of bag

英文解释:to reveal a secret or a surprise by accident.
直到顾客回家,“把猫从袋子里拿出来”(let the cat out of the bag),才发现这个骗局。 据说这也是谚语“不要买装在袋子里的猪”(don't buy a pig in a poke)的由来,也就是“不要不看现货就买东西”的意思。
eg:We knew then that he was expecting someone to arrive. It's a secret. Try not to let the cat out of the bag.

once in a blue moon

Ask the man on the Clapham omnibus the question 'What is a blue moon exactly?' and you are likely to get one of three answers:

1. Duh.
2. It's the second full moon in a calendar month.
3. It's when the moon looks blue.

Let's start with 3. Very occasionally, the moon actually does appear to be blue. This sometimes occurs after a volcanic eruption, like that of Krakatao in 1883. Dust particles in the atmosphere are normally of a size to diffract blue light, making the moon appear reddish at sunset. Larger volcanic dust particles diffract red light, making the moon appear bluish.

Tempting as it is to suppose that something that happens very rarely, and which is mentioned by name in a phrase that means 'very rarely', is the source of the phrase, it probably isn't.

eg:Jill: Does your husband ever bring you flowers? Ellen: Once in a blue moon.
