To earn a standard Louisiana high school diploma, students must complete a prescribed number of course credits. The current requirements are organized under the Louisiana Student Standards, which specify that students earn at least 23 credits across four years of high school (grades 9–12). These credits are distributed across several subject areas: four credits in English (English I, II, III, and a composition or literature course); four credits in mathematics (Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II, and a fourth advanced math course such as Pre‑Calculus, Math Essentials, or Financial Math); four credits in science (Biology I, Chemistry or Physics, and two additional science courses, one of which must be an advanced or applied science); four credits in social studies (World Geography, World History, U.S. History, Civics, and Free Enterprise/Economics); two credits in physical education or health; one credit in fine arts or career/technical education; and the remaining credits as electives. This framework ensures a balanced education that spans humanities, sciences, and practical skills.
